A Few Notes on Storytelling and Environments
Some of the things I hope you took away from storytelling and environments:
Drawing what’s around us will improve how and what we draw. And HEIGHTEN THE EXPERIENCE for ourselves and others.
IDEAS GROW ON TREES. Inspiration is all around us, it only takes a few scribbles to grow a great idea.
Drawing environments is as easy as a WALK IN THE PARK. The world is a busy place, keeping it simple and taking it one step at a time is less overwhelming – and more fun.
DRAW FROM YOUR LIFE. Our lives can seem uneventful, boring even - if we are lucky. But our art can elevate the everyday, and make it larger than life.
DEPTH. Digging deeper can add a greater depth of experience, emotion, and storytelling to your visual expression.
PERSPECTIVE. Do enough drawing and even perspective can become more agreeable – especially if we use perspective grids in Procreate! Drawing from life can offer a fresh perspective and unique point of view on art and life.
Most of all I hope you have experienced how drawing environments can TAKE YOU PLACES. An environment gives a character and audiences somewhere to go, obstacles to overcome, and things to discover.
I ran out of space on the page but one last thing I hope you take from the class is the COLLABORATIVE nature of making art. There is this romanticized idea of an artist alone in their studio creating art. But while an illustrator might work alone, their art is never alone. The very nature of illustration as communication makes it about not only the individual, but the people around them. Client, peers, and audiences. And also, the world around us. Live in your art, and let the world live through your art too!
